AUSTRALIAN HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEAR

ghd Ambassador Jayne Wild

Jayne Wild

ghd Ambassador, Jayne Wild, a couture stylist with 27 years in the business and proprietor of Wild Life Hair at Sydney's Milson's Point, is this year's winner of one of the highest awards in Australian Hairdressing.

International hairstylist, Errol Douglas had the honour of presenting Jayne with the Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year Award during the glittering event held at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre in June. Jayne's achievement is significant as she is the only woman to be awarded this prestigious title twice – previously in 2004 and again this year.

Dedicated to hair's role in the fashion industry, Jayne has directed shows at New York and Australian Fashion Weeks for designers including Toni Maticevski, Marnie Skillings, Lover, Mad Cortes and Thurley - building a reputation as one of hair’s most beautiful “dressers”. In her role as ghd Ambassador, Jayne was featured on Australia’s Next Top Model, and has directed hair at the Australian Inside Film Awards.

STYLE NOMAD

A MOMENT WITH...

ghd Australian Directive member and award winning stylist, Renee Walkom has worked at the Sydney-based salon, Suki, for the past 12 years. A regular on the editorial scene contributing to down under fashion magazines, Cream and Oyster, to say Renee is high in demand would be an understatement. Here, she talks to us about her work with the ghd Directive, being backstage at the international shows – and her penchant for Louis Vuitton luggage.

What made you choose the world of hair for your career?
I wanted to be part of the fashion industry! I liked the idea of being responsible for creating new fashion trends. It's such an exciting world to be a part of.

What inspires you?
My inspirations come from fashion, catwalk/runway shows, magazines, music, film, different photography and art.

Who do you admire in the hair industry and why?
I admire Eugene Souleiman and Sophie Roberts. Their impressive knowledge and talent for the industry is amazing.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?
A balance of experiences has been important for me to progress professionally and personally. I feel proud every day.

What advice would you give to ghd Experts who would like to move into session styling?
Go for it! Be in touch with fashion and designers. Say yes to everything and get as much experience as you can.

What makes you get up and go to work every day?
My passion for hair. My clients, my colleagues, we have a great team at Suki. And of course my love of Louis Vuitton handbags!

Describe a typical day with the ghd Directive?
It's an adventure, new and exciting! Anything from an early morning flight for education, to Australia's Next Top Model or working on a photo shoot for fashion label Lover to a late night working backstage at Australian and New York Fashion Weeks.

What's the most exciting event you have been involved in as a ghd Directive member?
Oh, I have many! I can't decide between being backstage at New York Fashion Week or being selected to travel to London for styling the ghd global photo shoot, Heavenly Creatures.

Kate Moss or Sienna Miller?
Sienna Miller.

Summer versus winter?
Summer for the weather. Winter for the fashion.

Wild night out or cosy night in?
I think that depends on the company!
