PURPLE REIGNS

Purple Reigns

Traditionally standing for luxury, wealth and sophistication; purple is a regal and powerful colour which oozes with femininity and romance. This rich shade is totally on trend at the moment and is set to stay that way all through 2010.

There's a dazzling range of purple tones to pick from; soft lilacs and lavenders, striking violets and magentas, and moody plums and pomegranates are all luxuriant yet wearable choices.

In the light of day opt for gentle, pastel shades for a sophisticated and flirtatious style. When darkness falls, switch to full on glamour with deep and expensive-looking jewel tones; amethyst will dazzle against metallic accessories like gunmetal clutch bags or golden heels.

For a simple, everyday nod to the trend try adding a bold splash of purple with tights, gloves, a belt or some eye-catching shoes. Team these flashes of purple with timeless black pieces like Alberta Ferretti for an impeccable, feminine take on the trend.

HIGH ROLLER

high roller

A funky and cool alternative to the quiff is the rolled fringe. Sported by singer VV Brown and created on the catwalk at Moschino, this unusual fringe styling is going to be a big deal in 2010 and you can expect everyone in the know to be having a go.

The artful and structured rolled fringe is more versatile than you might imagine. It hails back to the 1940s, meaning it looks vintage-inspired and feminine with a dress, but its high fashion look also makes it seem contemporary and edgy with jeans.

The style works best on long fringes or, even better, fringes which are in the process of being grown out. To start, spray a root lifting product like ghd uplift spray into the fringe, keeping one hand behind the hair to protect your forehead. Use a big round, barrel brush to pull the hair up and around, using a hairdryer at the same time to coax the hair into setting in a roll. Finish with a spritz of ghd fixation spray and you're ready to roll with it.

MINIMALIST

Whilst red lips, smoky eyes and false lashes are creative, there's one beauty trend which will always look chic and magnificently beautiful. An uncomplicated, fresh face working with the complexion's natural tones enhances what you've already got for an impressive, groomed look.

Done right, this rosy, radiant makeup makes the skin look youthful and pretty; fetching more than a few amorous glances. This trend is all about showing off an effortlessly beautiful complexion and should remain low maintenance and practical for everyday wear.

To get the look, first focus on getting a good skincare regime in order. Cleanse, tone and moisturise with the right products for your skin type every morning and night, and keep skin tone even with regular exfoliation.

Look towards actress Kate Bosworth for make-up inspiration. A fluid foundation will give a glowing finish whilst a slick of mascara and flush of blusher will pull the look together.

PRETTY PLAITS

Pretty Plaits

Giving an easy twist to any hairstyle, there's nothing prettier than a plait.  Wound around the base of a bun, sneaking into a swinging ponytail or taking centre stage in one long braid, the plait is both versatile and stylish.

The new season braid is focused on grown-up fun. At Twenty8Twelve's fashion show, hair was spun into a plaited up do with strong punk connotations. Messy braids were spun above the ear before exploding into a twisted ponytail secured at the nape of the neck, giving plaits a distinctly rock chick look.

To master the plaited up-do, spritz ghd creation spray onto dry hair to hold the style, before creating two braids on each side and pulling them into a ponytail. Flip the pony back under itself and secure, making the hair look shorter and bouncier. Finally, tease strands out from the braids and pony, for that care-free, undone attitude.
