COSTUMED CAPERS

New York’s sensational Met Ball has to be the most sophisticated and enchanting costume party around. From floor sweeping, seductive gowns to more extravagant, bold outfits, nearly anything goes on the Costume Institute’s red carpet. We bring you the fashion hits and misses of last week’s glorious event.
Zoe Saldana chose to play it safe with a simple one shouldered dress in shimmering, sparkly black. It may not have not have been an imaginative or daring choice, but it looked incredibly chic and sophisticated and suited her statuesque figure.
Sienna Miller caused a stir at the Met Ball and not just by bringing her ex, Jude Law, along as her date. The blonde bombshell stunned in a midnight Emilio Pucci gown which was dramatic and divine with a plunging neckline and thigh-baring split.
Also on the best dressed list were Nicole Richie sizzling sizzled in a metallic Marc Jacobs frock, Anne Hathaway who decided that bigger is better with a voluminous fairytale gown and Jessica Biel in a slinky silk Ralph Lauren number.
Katy Perry went for high drama, but took it too far with a day-glow LED dress in pink which, quite literally, lit up the red carpet.

BUM DEAL

If you thought backpacks and bumbags were the least fashionable accessories around, it’s time to think again. Don’t call the fashion police just yet; they’re back and looking better than ever.
An abundance of designers sent models down the catwalk with a rucksack thrown over their shoulders or a purse wound round the waist. This utilitarian piece of fashion comes in a range of styles for spring.
The bumbag was most commonly seen on the spring/summer catwalk heavily adorned. Marc Jacobs added gleaming metallic details and tassels whilst Topshop Unique covered their bumbags in pockets and graffiti motifs.
Oscar de la Renta created a more sophisticated variation of the bumbag. A simple beaded envelope in muted tones was slung low on the waist with a delicate, rope-like strap. Jonathon Saunders also went low-key with a plain black leather purse threaded onto a matching skinny belt.
The rucksack has a tough new urban look. At Heikki Salonen the classic backpack was turned on its head with a leather bag teamed with sturdy canvas straps. Drawstring versions were also rife on runways like Missoni, where the bags looked casual and slouchy.
Wear these on-trend bags shopping and make the most of the hands-free fashion whilst rifling through clothing racks.

GIVE IT SOME LIP

This spring and summer the new makeup trends are bright, bold and staggeringly beautiful. Whilst colourful eye shadow is high on the top trend list, the pout isn’t one to be left out. Right now, a pop of colour gracing the lip is an essential look for every fashion-conscious woman.
If you want to jump head first into this lip loving trend, be daring and pick up an orange lippy. Vivid tangerine, acidic sherbet, red hues, coral and pastel are all smack bang on trend, but the brighter the hue the better. Look towards the Herve Leger and Richard Tai catwalks, where the models pulled off the orange lipped look with aplomb.
Not ready to get lippy with orange? Pink puckers were all over the runways this season, and any shade goes. At Missoni, coral pink was a flirtatious alternative to red and looked just as glamorous and seductive, sugary sweet baby pink gloss was slicked on at Max Mara and Hermes and intense pinky red was seen at Prada.
For a darker, sultrier lip look opt for a plum lipstick and layer a deep pink over the top in the style of Marc by Marc Jacobs. The final result is a plumped up lip and lighter, more summery colour.

BRILLIANT BRETON

The trend for nautical clothing has been nipping in and out of style for years and this season it is once again making a return with Breton. The blue and white Breton stripes are the epitome of sailor chic, providing a smart and sophisticated take on the trend.
The mixture of blue and white is the ideal choice for the nautical stripes, but red and white also look great and have a brighter, more summery feel. Look for dresses, jumpers and t-shirts in the iconic pattern and team with admiral jackets, wide leg trousers and flat shoes for a classic day-time outfit.
Once you’ve found a favourite piece of sailor striped clothing, style it up with some well chosen accessories. You can go down the obvious route with some tongue in cheek anchor or boat motifs gracing bags, shoes or jewellery, which adds a sense of fun and humour to the look.
Alternatively, be more subtle and focus on your colour palette. Combine navy, white and blue for a traditional, ship shape style. A well tailored navy blazer layered over is trendy yet refined; add a slick of red lipstick or a bright scarlet corsage to finish the outfit.
