WEDGED

Wedged

The crossover between winter and spring can be difficult to manoeuvre in fashion terms. Whilst layering clothes allows us to peel off layers should the sun come out or add extra warmth when it doesn't, footwear provides a different challenge. The warm comfort of boots is still necessary but spring's gorgeous heels are starting to call.

This year, designers have come up with the perfect compromise in wedge-boots. Comfortable and easy to walk in no matter how much rain comes, whilst remaining chic and raising height – they can't go wrong.

As for style and fabric, anything goes, from tricked-up versions with studs to delicate suede in soft brown and smoking grey. Wear them short in the form of ankle boots as seen at Burberry, or go for ultra-sexy in long, black leather from the knee like Chanel's version.

Whatever your style is, look for solid, sculptural shapes for tough, trendy elegance.

DO THE TWIST

Do the twist

Hair is having a pretty and romantic make-over for spring but it's not without some contemporary appeal. Forget your standard ponytails, right now hair is all about 'the twist'.

A balance between modern and cutesy is struck with shimmery, gleaming locks spun into inventive designs. Twisted buns, looped ponytails and tucked in top-knots are all given a hard and futuristic slant with sleek textures and shiny surfaces reflecting the light. The result is a defined and sculptural hair style. Use ghd polishing serum and ghd shining serum to achieve the same glossy hair at home.

The Marc Jacobs show epitomised the trend with a harsh version of the loop; turning models into high-fashion ballerinas by fastening locks into severe topknots and, in a controversial move, fastening with retro scrunchies.

A more refined take on the trend was found at Giles, where models hair was rolled under itself for a look which oozed with understated chic.

STEPPING OUT

Stepping out

It was once a huge fashion no-no, but come spring we'll all be showing off our socks under sandals.

After a plethora of hugely respected design houses, including Burberry, Alexander Wang and Christian Dior, sent their models down the catwalks in bare legs, open toed heels and pop socks, showing off your socks is the new mini-trend in town. Really, it should be no surprise with cool girls like Chloe Sevigny and Fearne Cotton already sporting the style with aplomb.

This is one catwalk trend that's within everyone's budget, so if you're going to be stocking up on some show-stopping socks get it right! Look for iridescent fabrics which sparkle and shimmer; team them with peep toes and a cocktail dress for a fun eveningwear outfit. For daytime, toughen the look up as they did at Chloe with chunky knitted socks in dirty neutrals and put your best foot forward.

FRENCH POLISH

French Polish

French women are known the world over for their polished style, groomed looks and graceful demeanour. France's classical take on fashion and beauty was amplified on the spring/summer Parisian catwalks, where elegant, natural make-up shone through.

The look revolves around flawless beauty which looks effortless yet utterly perfect. To make the look work the skin needs to be at its best. Regular exfoliation and a good moisturiser give the complexion a refreshed, wide-awake finish which is luminous and youthful.

To get the look yourself, first add some subtle definition to the eye area by brushing brows upwards and strengthening them with a few strokes of brow pencil. Next, create a soft wash of delicate biscuit shades over the eyelids to make them pop. The real trick of working French glamour is some well-placed blusher. Sweep a delicate shade high on the cheekbones for some sophisticated Parisian polish. Vive la France!
