LFW 2010 BACK STAGE REPORT

LFW Behind the scenes

The force behind fashion label Sass & Bide, designer duo Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton, served up a rocker chick collection that concluded the first day of London Fashion Week.

Monochrome pieces dominated the show, accented with slices of gold, bronze and cream.

Embellishment played a big role, with feather, seas shells, pearls and jewels all decorating the slinky jumpsuits and cocktail dresses.

With the ghd team creating the masterful hairstyles that were sent down the catwalk, we went backstage to sneak a look behind the scenes.

Sass & Bide are acclaimed for their fusion of tough, rock girl style and innovative designs. So it was important for both the hair stylists and makeup artists to reflect this in their looks. Petros Petroholis, chief makeup artist for MAC, set things into motion with a demonstration of the cosmetics used for the show.

He took inspiration from the designs in the collection, focussing his attention on creating a graphic look, with a tribal feel to it.

The skin was given a washed-out yet dewy complexion, as foundation was buffed into the face to create an even and flawless finish. The eye was left practically bare; with no sign mascara and only a sweep of MAC Clear Lip Glass across the eyelid and cheekbone to enhance the glossy, reflective look to the skin. “It is all about the lip” Petros explained as a dark, rich berry shaded lip was painted onto the mouth with a brush, creating a full and velvety pout which was finalised with a slick of gloss.

Model’s hair took on a fantastical and dramatic style, as ghd hair director Renya created a look which she described as “theatrical” and “futuristic”. Hair was backcombed to create texture, and then rolled into an immense, sculptural twist which extended up and away. Each model was then adorned with a bronze skull cap, which was moulded to the side of the head.

To achieve a more practical, wearable version of this impressive hair Renya suggests creating a French twist, but insists that using the right products is of paramount importance to the look.

Use ghd fat hair lotion, followed by ghd obedience cream to ensure the hair stays frizz free, then saturate the locks with plenty of ghd maximise mousse and tease with a soft brush. Once hair has been rolled up and pinned in place, finish with a misting of ghd ultimate hairspray to set it in place.

PARIS HAUTE COUTURE WEEK: HAIR AND BEAUTY REPORT

Paris Haute Couture Week: Hair and Beauty Report

Paris Haute Couture Week showcases the most extreme and creative fashion that designers have to offer, but it’s also a chance for hair and makeup artists to show just how inventive they can be.

This season, makeup took on a loud, fantastical style as bold colour was used in a playful, make-believe way.

Jean Paul Gaultier and Valentino looked towards the movie Avatar for part of their inspiration. Valentino painted a sharp, bright, blue eye mask onto models’ creamy complexions whilst at Gaultier models sported clashing green and burnt orange hues eyes matched with a metallic copper lip, creating an almost tribal look. The lesson was clear; don’t be afraid to use brash colour, and lots of it.

With hairstyles, the wonderland concept was just as strong. At Chanel, hair was sculpted into oversized bouffants, laced with streaks of silvery white and adorned with a giant, fluffy bow for a modern Little Bo Peep style.

At Givenchy, hair had a serious stance. Long, straight tresses were given natural looking texture, with movement running through the lengths of the locks. Centre parted, tucked behind the ears and pouring down the back, the lengthy hair had a tough slant which meant business.

GO DISCO

Go Disco

If the London Spring/Summer catwalk shows were anything to go by, the big news in beauty for spring and summer in 2010 will be colour... the louder and bolder the better. While pastel, candy and ice-cream hues are being worked into a more subtle style, sharp neon and vivid rainbow shades will be whipping us all into a colour induced frenzy which screams 'disco'.

The trend is mostly focussed on the eye area, where layers of popping colour can be piled on for maximum effect. Issa wins out for exploring the look to full extent, with renowned makeup artist Pat McGrath creating an eye full of tropical, iridescent colour which gave models an unapologetic seventies vibe.

Elsewhere, Paul Smith ignored the eyes and poured attention on the lips, injecting them with a daring shot of acidic orange, fluorescent blue or shocking pink lipstick, for a decidedly after after-dark, party look.

SWEPT AWAY

Swept Away

Next spring, everyone in the know is going to be going for the chop, getting side swept fringes cut into their locks in order to capture this 2010 hair trend.

Beachy, tousled tresses will be out in force with a dishevelled, surfer girl side to them, but it’s not without its charm. The look is kept pretty with a flirty flick of fringe falling above one eye. The end result is a cheeky, flirtatious hair style which will have us all going weak at the knees.

Prada’s fashion show hair styles epitomised this new trend with messed-up bunches full of frizzy texture teamed up with a thick, sleek and heavy asymmetric fringe crossing the forehead.

To get the look scrunch ghd sea spray into damp hair, missing out the fringe. Apply ghd obedience cream to the fringe and blow-dry it to the side. To finish, roughly dry the remaining locks before separating into low bunches.
