Jennifer for ghd Pink

For the 17th annual limited-edition pink collection campaign, ghd has partnered with eight incredible muses. They're communicating a powerful and emotional message about the importance of self-checking for both yourself and your loved ones.

Meet Medina and her sister Nadia, both living in London.

Nadia, a psychologist for a child protection charity was shocked to discover a lump in 2020, aged 23, just before the pandemic. She has just finished chemotherapy and is scheduled to have a single mastectomy.

Nadia says: “I was diagnosed in June 2020; it was a complete shock. No one expected it, even the doctors. I can’t remember exactly what was said but I was told that the ultrasound and biopsies looked suspicious, and when they used the word ‘malignant’ I started crying. I had been looking at things online, so I knew what this meant.”

Watching her sister go through this journey has been difficult for Medina, especially watching her sister lose her hair. She says: “She took great pride in her hair and eyebrows which were her signature look. To see her struggling through treatment and to also lose part of her identity was heart breaking. It was so difficult to understand what she was going through.’’

Medina describes her sister as extremely resilient and always tries to take her mind off her diagnosis and treatment. She says: “Nadia hates any type of pity, so I made sure that through all the treatments, especially during lockdown that she would laugh a few times a day. We would binge watch Netflix, eat cookies and do other activities together.’’

After supporting her sister through this experience, Medina urges other young women to check their breasts regularly.

She says: “Checking your breasts is one of the most important things anyone can do for their health and future health. Nadia only by chance found the lump. Cancer doesn’t care who you are or how old you are - it is so important to check at any age. All my family now check regularly, it shouldn’t have to happen to someone close to you for you to check.”
