Jennifer for ghd Pink

For the 17th annual limited-edition pink collection campaign, ghd has partnered with eight incredible muses. They're communicating a powerful and emotional message about the importance of self-checking for both yourself and your loved ones.

Meet Jennifer, a cake artist and small business owner from London. She is living with an incurable secondary breast cancer diagnosis, having been first diagnosed with primary breast cancer nearly 11 years ago in her early 30s.

Jennifer did not regularly check her breasts. She says: “If I’m honest I never checked my breasts before my diagnosis, I was only 31 and I just didn’t think I needed to. I never saw young black women in breast cancer campaigns, so it just didn’t occur to me that it was something that I was at risk of.’’

Her diagnosis came as a complete shock. She says: “When I had my primary diagnosis back in 2010, I thought that was the worst thing that could happen to me. I spent my 30s worrying that it would come back but didn’t really believe it would. Eight years later, 2nd August 2018, what I feared the most, what I thought would be the worst nightmare became my reality. I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, there is no stage 5.”

Despite the challenges she faces, Jennifer describes herself as a thriver, she says: “Living with breast cancer takes some getting used to. I have transitioned from victim to survivor and now thriver. I do not let my diagnosis define me or dictate to me the kind of life I lead.”

Jennifer shares her story with us this year to encourage young women to check their breasts regularly. “Knowing your normal can literally save your life. Everyone needs to check their breasts regularly so that they can notice any changes and get their GP to refer them for further checks, if they find anything that worries them. Early detection can save lives.’’
