5 steps to healthier hair

In an age of increased pollution, temporary hair colour and seasonal trend changes, it’s no wonder our hair appears to be increasingly damaged. But, no matter how dull or lacklustre your hair is, ghd have the insider tricks to help turn your troubled tresses into super-healthy, shiny locks.

Banish bad hair days with the help from the ghd experts; chief technology officer, Dr Tim Moore and UK brand ambassador, Zoe Irwin.

1. turn down the temperature when drying

“You need to treat hair carefully when it is wet. Wet hair is weakened which means that it is easily broken and damaged by high temperatures. In fact, the denaturation temperature of hair drops when it is wet, so you must be careful when drying.

Start by towel drying the hair in a scrunching, circular motion before using a hairdryer. Then take ghd heat protect spray and spritz liberally on the lengths of the hair and comb though. Blow dry using the ghd air® hair dryer on the lowest, cool setting, to ensure that you don't heat the hair above the denaturation temperature - you can feel this while drying as the hair will suddenly start to warm up.”

2. get the temperature right when styling

“Using heat appliances above the 185°C glass transition phase creates vertical cracks along the cuticle, causing the cuticle to lift, resulting in tangles and splits. All ghd styling tools maintain a continuous heat of 185°C which is the optimum and healthiest temperature to style, without compromising the health of your hair.* Styling below 185°C will often take many passes of the tool to achieve a good result, which is more drying to the hair and causes further split ends!”
- Dr Tim Moore, ghd chief technology officer

Advanced Split End Therapy

3. Split end SOS

“Take the time to use a treatment or mask in your hair once a week to nourish and repair damaged ends. The ghd advanced split end therapy is a must-have for healthy hair as it fills and binds broken hair fibres together to instantly repair split ends, whilst preventing future breakage by surrounding each strain with a protective coating.”

4. Protect your hair

“Always make sure your hair is protected when you are styling it. The ghd heat protect spray provides an invisible barrier to everyday heat styling. Spritz this heat protect spray through dry hair before styling it and you’ll also find that your style lasts for longer too. Continual heat styling without protection can result in cuticle damage which causes hair to lose its shine, feel rough and will ultimately result in split ends.”
- Zoe Irwin, ghd UK ambassador

5. Massage the scalp

“Massage your head daily to improve blood circulation to your scalp, to improve your hair health and encouraging your hair to grow! In addition to this, use a ghd paddle brush to gently brush your hair. Paddle brushes are the gentlest form of brush; the rounded end ensures you cannot scratch the scalp and the evenly spread out plastic bristles cause less tension with fibre interaction when detangling to ensure the scalp and hair isn’t damaged.”

Zoe's top tip

“If your hair’s still lacklustre, don’t forget to look at other elements of your life – prime enemies of hair health are: diet, smoking, stress, lack of vitamins and dehydration.”
