‘Kiss this cancer, I live for every moment

“When I found out I had incurable secondary breast cancer in 2014, aged just 36, I didn’t think I’d see my 40th birthday. I didn’t think I’d be around to look after my kids this far into the future. I also never thought I’d find anyone to date again, after my marriage failed to survive my breast cancer diagnosis.

When I found my first lump in 2013, I was told it was nothing. Then I found another one a few months later and was sent to a breast clinic. I went through a load of tests and scans and was told I’d have to wait two weeks for results. But the very next day, my GP called me and told me to go to hospital."

“Just days later, I was in an ambulance. I was diagnosed with primary breast cancer in hospital. I was on my own, so I had to be strong. Five days later, still in hospital having endless blood transfusions, I heard the most devastating news – the cancer had spread to my bones. It was incurable.

Well I still needed to get it under control. I went through weeks and months of chemo and radiotherapy. I’m now on a cocktail of different drugs to keep me alive. These have sadly landed me in an early menopause, with hot flushes, I’m knackered lots of the time and I have pain in my bones.

But here I am. Freshly forty. Still busy looking after my three amazing children. And I’ve just met the most incredible man. But it’s been a hard time getting to such a positive place. I just finished my forty before forty, a list of things I wanted to do before I reached this age – if I did. That’s been everything from learning to swim to getting a tattoo, even hosting a radio show! I live every day and seize every moment – that’s my way of saying kiss this, cancer. .”
