Q&A with Justine Marjan
Justiney, Teeny, Teenzy
Do you have a morning ritual?
When I wake up and I make hot water with apple cider vinegar and lemon first thing while I brew stove top espresso with almond milk. I then sip on my coffee while I do hair and makeup. After makeup I run my ghd platinum flat iron through my hair, usually just on the ends and around the face to quickly polish it. If there’s time, I’ll have breakfast with my fiancé (he’s a great cook!) and we’ll sit on our computers and answer emails, etc.
How would you describe your hair philosophy?
Hair is fun! It grows, it’s not permanent. Have fun with it! It’s fashion. Don’t take it too seriously. Experiment and play around with it.
What’s your go-to playlist when driving to work?
My musical taste varies depending on my mood, but I listen to XM radio in may car so I can always change the station depending on how I feel that day. I love 90’s/early 2000s pop and hip hop, old school hip hop, r&b, and indie music.
What is the one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I started a business in 4th grade making business cards for people. I put fliers all around town and two kids in 7th grade replied to my ad and were my first clients.
What is your simple (but necessary) indulgence?
Coffee!! I used to only drink coffee on special occasions, but now I’m hooked and totally a coffee snob. My fiancé and I have mastered stovetop espresso and we love searching out amazing coffee shops.
Who do you love to follow on Instagram?
@kendallkyra @blairz @designlovefet @valleybrinkroad @forbes @girlboss @luxyfashion @teenvogue @womenruletheuniverse
What do you like to do in your down-time?
Cook, decorate, yoga, exercise, read, go to museums
You have 60 seconds to style your hair: what do you do?
Run my ghd platinum+ iron through the ends and create a slight bend around my face.
If you weren’t a stylist, what would you be doing?
Photography. I love capturing someone’s beauty.
If you could do anyone’s hair, who would it be?
Sofia Loren and Beyoncé
If you could only use one styling tool for the rest of your life, what would it be?
The ghd platinum+ flat iron. I can create waves, curls, and smooth styles with the flat iron and can manipulate how much hairspray I use to tame or hold a style.
What is the most underrated hair style?
Ponytails!! People think we just throw it up, but there’s so much that goes into it and an amazing pony brings so much more than one that wasn’t executed well.
What was your first job in hair/what was your first big break?
My first job with hair was working at a hair salon in Santa Barbara when I had just turned 18. I was the receptionist, then worked there as an assistant on weekends and at night while I went to beauty school, eventually working my way to lead stylist. My first big break was when Kim Kardashian asked me for braids over a year ago! The braids were everywhere and it really pushed me forward in a big way.
What’s your advice to anyone looking to follow in your footsteps?
Be willing to take two steps back for one step forward. Sometimes the path to success isn’t always linear and we have to think about what are goals are and where we’re going. Be willing to work hard, be humble, and never think you’re too good for something. Reach out to people you admire and ask for advice and don’t be afraid to take risks!
