DIAGNOSED AT 25

Tell us who you are, your age and a little bit about your story?
I was 25, working as a photo editor, living in Milan. And then: breast cancer.
I photographed every day throughout my treatments. Now I’m 29, working as a yoga instructor, living in London. My life is guided by curiosity, as it is an endless journey of new experiences.

Tell us about the moment you first discovered there was a problem?
I noticed there was a little lump on my breast and I thought it was a mosquito bite! As it got bigger, my mum annoyed me telling me that I had to go and get it checked. After being misdiagnosed by the first doctor, I then met the best doctors ever! I had cancer. As I got home and I was alone, I cried for 2 hours and then I hit the gym (gym freak, I know!) and in that moment I decided that nothing could have stopped me.

Did you ever think that breast cancer could affect you? If not, why?
I would have never imagined breast cancer could affect me, I guess that’s because there are certain things that just happen to other people. And you never think you can be one of these others... until you are!

Have you learned anything surprising about yourself in this process?
That I’m STRONG! Before cancer, I had this idea of myself: scared of everything. As I started the treatment, I realised it was all a mind game and it’s all about the story you tell yourself.

What’s the one thing you would say to young women out there who are not currently doing regular self-checks?
We can’t force people to do self-checks. I’ve been there too, we never listen to what other people say. But we all know self-checks are so useful and can save your life. Some people are not willing to share their journey, but I think that’s the only thing in my power to maybe get you to check your boobs once in a while!
