FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is ghd’s hair oil the same as a pre-wash hair oil treatment?
No. ghd’s oils are styling products, applied to wet or dry hair as part of finishing a look, not treatments meant to sit on hair before you shampoo. A pre-wash treatment oil is typically applied to dry hair and left on for a period of time before washing it out, which is a different use case entirely. Using a styling oil as a pre-wash treatment won’t cause harm, but it’s not what the formula is built for, so results won’t match what a dedicated pre-wash oil delivers.
Can hair oil be applied to the scalp, or only the strands?
ghd’s styling oils are built to be applied to the strands, not the scalp, since their job is coating hair for shine and smoothness rather than treating the scalp itself. Applying a styling oil at the scalp is more likely to make roots look greasy than to deliver any scalp benefit, since it’s formulated for the hair shaft. Scalp oiling is a separate practice with its own products, typically used before washing rather than as a styling step.
How many drops of hair oil should I use for my hair length?
Short hair usually needs one to two drops, medium-length hair about two to three, and long or thick hair three to five, applied through the mid-lengths and ends rather than all at once at the roots. Starting with less and adding a drop at a time if hair still looks dull is easier to correct than starting with too much. Texture matters too: finer hair at any length generally needs less than coarse or thick hair of the same length.
Does hair oil work differently depending on hair porosity?
Yes, low-porosity hair resists absorbing oil, so it tends to sit on the surface and can look greasy faster with the same amount that would soak into higher-porosity hair. High-porosity hair absorbs oil quickly but also loses it faster, so it often needs reapplying sooner than low-porosity hair would. If oil seems to “do nothing” or feels heavy no matter how little you use, porosity is usually the reason, not the product itself.
