Common blowout issues and how to resolve them
Blowouts can take time to perfect, and you might run into a few issues that leave you feeling deflated. To avoid having your perfect hair day ruined, check out these common issues and how to fix them quickly:
Frizz after a blowout
Frizz is one of the most common issues with any hairstyle, but it can taint the appearance of your blowout in seconds. Frizz occurs from too much humidity, incomplete drying, and a lack of anti-frizz or heat protectant products.
But don't worry - there's an easy fix for frizz. Instead of jumping straight into styling your hair after a shower, use a smoothing serum or lightweight oil like ghd Dramatic Ending. Make sure your hair is completely dry before stepping outside, and apply a lightweight holding spray to lock your style in.
Volume that doesn't hold
When you want an instant volume boost, a blowout is your best friend. However, some people experience their hair falling flat shortly after styling. This can happen for a number of reasons, but the most common culprits are product buildup, not enough volume at the root, or using the wrong brush and technique.
How to fix a lack of volume? Start with washing your hair with lightweight products only (bonus points if you use a volumizing shampoo), and use ghd Pick Me Up - Root Lift Spray before drying. Blow dry with a round brush, taking care to lift hair at the roots and aiming the airflow upward. After each section is dry, finish with a blast of cold air to lock in the shape.
Hair feels damaged after a blowout
While blowouts can make your hair look a million bucks, some people are left disappointed that it doesn't feel quite as good as it looks. This might happen because you've used too much heat, too little heat protectant, or you've brushed it too much during the styling session.
Luckily, there are a few easy fixes for such an issue. First of all, never skip the heat protectant (our favourite is ghd Bodyguard)! Spritz generously and wait for it to dry before using heat on your hair. Next, only use medium heat and finish with cool air. It can be tempting to use the hottest option available, but this will leave your hair dehydrated and brittle. Limit the amount of passes on each section, and deeply condition your hair once a week to replenish moisture.
Split ends
Split ends are a common issue when using lots of heat on your hair, and they come from old, damaged ends. When giving yourself a blowout, you might find that these brittle ends are accentuated when using high heat on already fragile tips.
To rectify split ends and flyaways, always apply a nourishing oil or ghd Rehab after each blowout and prevent concentrating heat on the ends of your hair for too long. Split ends can't be repaired, so get regular trims to maintain healthy ends, too.
Your hair won't hold its shape
One of the magical benefits of blowouts is that you can decide what shape you want to give your hair - whether it be Hollywood curls, beachy waves, or even voluminously straight. However, if you find that your hair isn't holding its shape very well after you've finished styling it, it might be because you're not setting your hair or skipping the cool-down.
To remedy this, always use a lightweight styling product beforehand and finish with a light-hold hairspray. If you're aiming for curls or waves, after blow-drying each section, roll it into a loose curl and pin it while it cools.
Blow out hair FAQs
Q1: How long does a blowout typically last?
A great blowout generally lasts between three and five days, depending on your hair type, texture, and environmental factors. Straight or slightly wavy hair might hold its style for longer, while curly hair might drop the blowout style sooner because of how natural curl patterns react to humidity in the air.
Q2: What's the best round brush size for different hair lengths?
The best round brush size varies depending on the length of your hair. ghd experts know the importance of using the right brush size for your length, which is why we offer four radial brushes:
- Size 1: 25 mm, perfect for creating a root lift for shorter styles or fringes
- Size 2: 35 mm, ideal for blow drying mid-length hair
- Size 3: 45 mm, perfect for long hair for quick and easy blow drying
- Size 4: 55 mm, for extra-long hair where lots of volume is needed
Using the right brush for your hair length keeps your blowout from taking too much time, and gives you an appropriate amount of bounce and volume for your hair to hold.
Q3: Can you achieve a salon-quality blowout on curly or frizzy hair?
Of course! Achieving a salon-quality blowout on curly or frizzy hair is absolutely possible as long as you use the right tools and techniques. Here are our favourite tips:
- Always use a lightweight heat protectant
- Section your hair properly and brush each section beforehand
- Use a round brush and concentrator nozzle, or a wet-to-dry brush
- Finish with a cool shot to set the style
The Duet Blowdry is perfect for curly hair. It transforms wet hair into blow-dried hair with no heat damage¹ and significantly reduces flyaways and frizz.
¹No thermal hair damage detected after 100 cycles of 4 passes on thoroughly towel-dried hair.
Q4: Is a blowout damaging to my hair?
Not necessarily. When performed correctly without excessive heat, blowouts aren't inherently damaging. In fact, they can be more gentle than using other styling tools, such as straighteners and curling wands, on your hair every day. Using a heat protectant, avoiding the highest heat setting, and towel drying your hair first can all minimise potential damage to your hair.
Q5: How long should a blowout take to do at home?
An at-home blowout should only take between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on your hair length, although this timeframe can differ depending on your experience. Blowout techniques can take a few attempts to master, so the first few tries might take longer. To reduce styling time, we recommend letting your hair partially air-dry (to around 75 - 80%) before blow-drying.
Q6: How often can I safely blowout my own hair?
When it comes to the safety of your hair, preparation and protectants are essential. Prepping the hair with Volume Forever not only leaves you with 4x more volume¹ for 24-hour salon blowouts, but it also uses the advanced ghd heat protection system to give your hair a thermal layer so you can use heat safely.
Choosing a hot styling tool that minimises heat damage is another way to safely blowout your own hair. Our ghd Duet Blowdry uses Heat-Air Xchange Technology™ to ensure seamless voluminous styling with no heat damage². Minimise the number of passes over each section of hair and don't use excess heat where it's not needed to avoid damage as much as possible.

²No thermal hair damage detected after 100 cycles of 4 passes on thoroughly towel-dried hair.
Q7: What temperature setting is best for a blowout?
The optimal styling temperature for hair is 185 degrees C. Our experts have found that any temperature higher than 190 degrees causes internal damage to the cortex of the hair, which is irreversible and leads to hair breakage. Likewise, cooler temperatures lower than 160 degrees cause damage to the external cuticle of the hair, leading to dry, porous hair that won't hold style.
185 degrees is the perfect in between, proven to be the optimum temperature for long-lasting styles and for healthy, shiny hair with the least amount of damage possible.
Q8: Can I achieve a blowout with styling products?
Yes. We recommend using lightweight styling products that protect the hair from heat damage. These include:
- Heat protectant sprays: Bodyguard protects all hair types from damage
- Volumising cream or mouse: Volume Forever and Body Goals are your blowout tool's best friends
- Root lift sprays: Pick Me Up keeps plenty of volume at your roots all day long
- Light-hold hairsprays: Perfect Ending is the best way to finish your styling session for long-lasting results
Q9: What's the difference between a blowout and a blow-dry?
Blow drying your hair is the simple act of drying it with a blow dryer, primarily removing moisture to leave it clean and dry. On the other hand, a blowout is a styling technique that involves drying hair with specific methods, such as a round brush and concentrator nozzle, to achieve a smooth, voluminous, and styled finish.
